take action

Become a Surfrider volunteer

At Surfrider, volunteers are at the heart of our efforts to protect the ocean and its ecosystems. Thanks to their commitment, we are able to carry out concrete actions in the field, such as waste collection and awareness-raising, as well as more specialised projects based on their skills. Whether you want to participate in our local missions or contribute your expertise, there are many ways to get involved with us in defending the ocean. Join us and become an agent of change!

What is it like to volunteer at Surfrider?

Donating one's time

Being a volunteer for Surfrider also means taking part in missions that are sometimes short, whether they are regular or one-off! Dedicating a few minutes at the end of the day or a few hours at the weekend to put your skills to good use for the association is also what volunteering is all about!

Wherever

Whether you want to get out and about (participating in local events, litter picking, etc.) or prefer to stay cosy at home and lend us a hand, anything is possible!

To work alongside us

No specific skills are required to help us. Are you motivated, dynamic and cheerful? That’s exactly what we need! Whatever your professional experience or field of study, you will find a role that suits you.

some examples of voluntary work

At Surfrider, we tailor our activities to what you want and are able to do (while ensuring that we remain consistent with our needs and internal employee obligations). That’s why the tasks we offer to people who want to become volunteers are usually related to their skills or passions.

For example:

Missions bénévoles

Perhaps you could help us design a poster for an event organised by a local group or create a cool visual for our next booklet on water quality!

Then you will be the ideal person to capture an event organised by Surfrider or one of the local groups.

It is possible that we may need you to translate or simply proofread a document in one of these languages.

If you are particularly concerned about the impact of the restaurant industry on the environment and the ocean, you could give us a hand in expanding the network of Ocean Friendly Restaurants near you.
And if you’re a bit of a smooth talker, you’ll feel right at home at a Surfrider stand during a cultural or sporting event, talking passionately about the dangers it faces and the importance of protecting it.

There are many ways to volunteer, choose yours

in the field

Joining Surfrider as a volunteer in the field means taking concrete action to protect the ocean while enjoying an enriching and friendly experience.

By participating in our flagship programmes, such as Ocean Initiatives, or by getting involved in a local group, you can take concrete action, such as waste collection or awareness campaigns.

These missions, organised outside working hours, are a great opportunity to contribute to environmental preservation while sharing memorable moments with other enthusiasts.

Engagement citoyen

Ocean Initiatives

The clean-ups organised as part of the Retrace! project are initiatives to raise awareness of the issue of aquatic waste by organising waste collection on beaches, lakes, rivers and the seabed.
If you would like to organise your own clean-up, visit the Retrace! website or contact oceaninitiatives@surfrider.eu for more information.

Local groups

Local groups are groups of volunteers spread
across Europe who organise numerous events, actions and environmental campaigns for Surfrider: waste collection, awareness-raising in schools, implementation of environmental campaigns, organisation of events, development of partnerships, strengthening of the membership network, etc.
