Education & Art

Exhibitions, film screenings, school trips…
Surfrider uses art and education to inspire wonder, stir emotions and provide the keys to caring for the ocean.

ocean friendly films

Overfishing, plastic pollution, global warming… Ocean-Friendly Films help us understand the threats facing the ocean so we can better combat them.

Ocean-Friendly Films are screenings organised by volunteers from various local groups across Europe.
Surfrider provides them with a royalty-free catalogue and advice on how to organise a screening, lead a discussion and promote the event.

ocean friendly restaurants

The Ocean Friendly Restaurants eco-responsible charter
supports restaurateurs in their efforts to eliminate plastic, make their menus more plant-based and ban endangered species, among other things.

This charter has already been signed by more than 130 restaurateurs in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Spain and Bulgaria.

ocean friendly garden

At Surfrider’s headquarters in Biarritz (south-west France), we decided to create an Ocean Friendly Garden, also known as a ‘rain garden’. This project aims to rethink urban development in order to limit water pollution and preserve the ocean.
To achieve this, 300 m² of parking space was de-concreted to make way for this ecological garden.

The goal? To treat the plot as a micro-watershed to capture water as soon as it falls, thereby recovering, saving, infiltrating and even purifying it.

This garden has a dual benefit: it helps to preserve water resources, which are particularly precious in the face of increasingly intense and frequent droughts due to climate change, and it reduces the risk of flooding by promoting the natural infiltration of water into the soil. By allowing the soil to absorb water instead of letting it run off on impermeable surfaces, the Ocean Friendly Garden also helps to limit the transfer of pollutants to waterways and, ultimately, to the ocean.

art campus

A meeting place between two worlds, the Art Campus offers the public a new perspective and a sensitive approach to our relationship with the environment, making art a powerful lever for behavioural change.

Since its creation in 2012, numerous artists and collectives have collaborated with the Surfrider Foundation, presenting meaningful permanent or travelling exhibitions. Throughout the year, the art space at the association’s headquarters in Biarritz welcomes the public and offers workshops with artists, combining art and ecological awareness.

The Art Campus is now extending its influence across Europe, with travelling exhibitions at festivals, conferences and museums.
